The Alchemist

Book Review

Title : The Alchemist
Author : Paulo Coelho
Original Title : O Alquimista
Translator : Alan R.Clarke
Country : Brazil
Language : Portugese
Genre(s) : Novel
Publication Date : 1998
Published in English : 1993

* A must-read book!

I am very fond of reading. I read a lot - both online and offline. A book that I have read and re-read, and one that has inspired me is "The Alchemist" written by Paulo Coelho. Paulo Coelho is known for his inspiring books. This book is the Brazilian author's second book, which at first only drew 900 copies, but for his determination went on to be a bestseller with now over 56 languages translated and with 65 million copies sold worldwide. [fact from Wikipidea] The essence of this book is in its simplicity. It is a simple book with a philosophical meaning.

The Alchemist is a story of a young shepherd in search of his dreams. The story revolves around the main character of a shepherd boy, Santiago whose desires to travel lead him to rare sheep, walking from town to town selling his wools. However his care-free life changed when he first wanted to meet again a merchant's daughter after a year. But before he could do that, he stops and meets an old man [King of Salem] who then told him to follow his heart [and dreams] ~ where he is to find treasure in the pyramids.

Along the course of his journey, the boy meets with very interesting characters like gypsies, crystal shop merchant, the caravan and an Englishman, a desert women ~ Fatima whom he later fell in love and finally the Alchemist. These characters played a part in bringing the boy closer to his dreams, and more importantly shaping the thoughts of the boy who began to "live her dreams" and follow his heart.

Life is not about stability and money, it is about dreams and love, and when you follow your destiny, the entire universe conspires to help you achieve it. This book will inspire us to follow our dreams and gut feel. And the thoughts of the boy are well explains which are sometimes similar to our own thoughts ~ about others and oneself, gives a reflection on our lives as well.

A single line description for The Alchemist would be,
"In dreams and in love there are no impossibilities."

So, what are you waiting for.. go ahead in search of both, be free and fear no one...

Who Moved My Cheese?

Book Review

Title : Who Moved My Cheese?
Author : Dr Spencer Johnson
Language : English
Genre/s : Self-help/motivational
Publication date : 1998

* Who moved my cheese is a must-read book for everyone

Dear my blog's reader,

I have something to share with you all today. I finished reading a thin book "Who Moved My Cheese?". I believe most of you must have read it or have heard of it. For those that don't know, "Who Moved My Cheese?" is a fairly popular book about how to deal with change in your life. What I like about this book is that it is short, simple and easy to read. This makes it ideal for almost everyone. It took me all of 20 minutes++ to read it - it is very small book.

Spencer Johnson has masterfully handled the subject of dealing with change using an allegorical story of two mice (Sniff and Scurry) and two humanoid little people (Hem and Haw). Writing on this topic would have forced any author to get into lecturing a reader and would have lost them without conveying the message.

Since Spencer Johnson has chosen the story form he has avoided this problem and has managed to convey the message very well. As you read the story, you can easily identify yourself with the number of times you have been Hem and why should have been more like Haw.

The ideas in this book are clean and sharp. I would like to share some of the important points contained inside. I will just extract the important sentences from the book for you. Please take a look. Hope these sentences can inspire you and make your day great and meaningful!

~ Life moves on, and so should we
~ If you do not change, you can become extinct
~ Better late than never
~ He is taking control, rather than simply letting things happen to him
~ Always imagine yourself enjoying your new 'cheese' leads you to have it
~ An organization can only change when enough people in it change
~ Savor the adventure and enjoy the taste of new cheese!
~ The quicker you let go of old cheese, the sooner you can enjoy new cheese.

Well, the above is a summary of book, and I will paste these 8 sentences on my wall and think about them whenever I see them.

Basically, I dislike changes, as they give me a sense of insecure. After reading this book, I feel that I should change my attitude and embrace changes instead of avoiding changes. I used to rant and rave at the injustice of all the sudden changes in my life and then became depressed.

If I ask you all out there, how many of you are afraid of change, I believe there are some of you who are like me in the past, resisting changes in our daily exercise!! However after reading this book, I realized that changes may not be as bad as you imagine them to be.

The world changes continuously and all the things on this planet are changing, even our friends and our family members. Some of them are changing for better; some of them unfortunately are becoming not so friendly and helpful people.

Since we cannot stop these changes from taking place, then why don't we embrace these changes with passion? It is our choice to deal with the changes, if we hide or avoid from these changes, it makes us feel insecure and not confident; if we face these changes and adapt ourselves with the environment, and we can reap the benefits that are hidden behind these sudden changes.

So, be open minded and accept these changes, and a new world and better opportunities will await us!!

Ok, I have to go and do my work now and I wish you have a great day ahead!

To your success and happiness,
*Lenny*

Never Between You and Them Anyway...

I am so intensely sad these days...
Why can't people accept and like me for who I am? Why do I have to be a punching bag? Abused, chewed and spit out when not needed, and turned into a listening ear, when nobody else is available... I'm changing... for better or worse... but I will no longer be as someone else once put it... "a toxic handler". Go throw your Chernobyl waste on someone else now!

A blog is always a better shoulder to cry on than stupid *****!! A blog is always there to listen to you, doesn't throw tantrums, and doesn't say the strangest of things at the worst of times... and most of all, a blog always understand... Lets you talk, till you've exhausted yourself and can sleep peacefully...

Just cheer up, L.E.N.N.Y !! Remember this :

People are often unreasonable and self-centered... forgive them anyway...
If you are honest, people may cheat you... be honest anyway...
If you find happiness, people may be jealous... be happy anyway...
The good you do today, maybe be forgotten tomorrow... do well anyway...
Give the world the best you have and it may never be enough... give your best anyway...
In the end, it is between Allah and you.
It never was between you and them anyway...

Addiction!

It sucks when you are addicted to someone who constantly hurts you bad, and no matter how hard you try, you can't live without that person!! So, even when you promise yourself each time you bleed, that you'd let your wounds heal and move on, the craving comes back. And you end up being murdered over and over and over again... Will it ever stop?

Remember when we were kids? We thought we would grow up and solve all the problems of this world, and the world would be the perfect place to live in? Somehow, during the process of growing up, we have come to learn that things aren't that straightforward. And with this pinch on the arm, we are thrown back into the world of reality.

I wouldn't blame people who choose to take the hardest path to life. It was their life, and they made their choice, so due respect to them.

"The Best of Times, or the Worst of Times...."
"The Age of Wisdom, or The Age of Foolishness...."
"Go Directly to Heaven, or Go Directly to the Other Way"
"The choice is yours..."

But we do have control over our lives, so let's make our decisions wisely..
As George Orwell said,

"The consequences of every act are included in the act itself."

So, let's make bold choices, if we want to live and let live!

* Love people not because you want to be loved

* Love them because they deserved your love!

Down Memory Lane

It's funny how a something trivial, like a simple conversation with a friend, can trigger one's memories. You also see how quick things have changed in so short amount of time it seems. I received a message from my long lost friend on Friendster. Actually, he is my classmate when I was in secondary school. We had a group of friends to hang out with all the time. God! It's been 10 years since the day that I moved out to other school. I really love Friendster, and now kind of meeting more of other long lost friends.

He started telling me news of some of our group from secondary school. First, he is dating someone very nice and respectful. They are looking at getting married within a year or so. I was shocked to hear this suddenly and elated... because he always don't have confident in a relationship. Very soft-spoken and shy guy! It's so great that he has found someone. I thought he was pulling my leg [as a joke to give me a heart attack!] But he was serious. Very cool! I was very happy to hear awesome news!

It's cool to hear about my friends finding someone. I'm ecstatic for them. I have seen most of them go through some crazy relationships and wondered, "Why?". But somehow they have gotten through the awkward stuff and found someone genuine from what I have heard and seen. Most of them always came to me for advice... in my head I thought, "Why me... I don't know anything!!!?". But I guess I am just fascinated with observing people and watching them grow and learn from their experiences. I have been a part of that. I am privileged for that opportunity.

I remember when I was in Form 3, one of my teacher said, " When you grow up, and started to work, that time you will miss your school years very much". Yes.. Now, I really miss those times. I don't have much memories of those years documented anywhere. I was surprised by how many people I don't even remember now, but also warmed by how many special people have come in and out of my life ~ and how many I still keep in touch with.

Come to think of it, how lucky those people nowadays. Handphone with camera is available anywhere. Digital camera is something that anyone can afford now. Friendster, Myspace, Facebook, blog, multiply etc ~ there are so many mediums that they can documented their live. Back then, point and shoot film camera is something quite expensive for a student to get. Handphone? It's luxury item and no camera available yet. Internet? What is that? I happened to first use internet only in the year of 1999 and all those networking website is not yet available. Haha...

Ok... Now I can't remember exactly where I was going... haha... Things just pop in and bang!! There it is... Another one from my random thought..

I really miss my friends very much! Muahssss.....

Hanya di Mercu

Composer : Aubrey Suwito
Lyrics by : Habsah Hassan

Mimpi dan harapan
Bagaikan duri yang mencengkam
Tak pernah terluahkan
Hanyalah dihati tersimpan terpendam
Keterbatasan diriku menjadi penghalang

Sampai bila aku bertanya sampai bila
Ku harus mencuba
Bila lagi desak hatiku bila lagi
Aku harus berani
Lalu ku bangkit tegak berdiri
Mengatur langkahku terus mendaki
Cita-cita ku di mercu

Mimpi dan harapan
Cecita yang tinggi menjulang
Seandainya ku biar cecita di hati tersimpan terpendam
Keterbatasan tak wajar menjadi penghalang

Aku mencari kekuatan
Dalam kelemahan
Ku temui kejayaan
Dalam keberanian...
